    Baraque Michel (the German name Michelshütte is no longer used today) is a hostel (674 metres) in the High Fens belonging to Jalhay in Belgium, which was founded in 1811/1812 by Michel Henri Schmitz, a stonemason from the Rhineland. In 1812, a Michel Schmitz built a hut here. According to legend, he was keeping a promise after he once got lost in the Fens and, in his distress, vowed to build a hut if he was rescued. After his death in 1819, his family converted it into a hostel for travellers. Every evening they rang a bell to show lost people the way. It can still be seen on the side of the road today.

        La croix Sarlette (1861):
        The croix sarlette is located inconspicuously and probably often unnoticed on the gable of the Auberge de la Baraque-Michel. This memorial cross was erected in 1861 and commemorates the death of a young servant of Bullange, Anne-Catherine Sarlette, in the Baraque, who died on August 21, 1860 after a serious illness.

          Another monument worth seeing is the Boulté stone column, built in 1566, a little further on the other side of the street opposite the entrance to the Fischbach Chapel. This striking column used to serve as a landmark in the Fens. Even with a meter-high blanket of snow, the 4.5m high monument was still clearly visible. The crown of the column represents a pine cone on which a small cross is attached. In addition to the Pannhaus and Captain's Column, the Boulté used to be one of the three large waymarks on the Sourbrodt - Jalhay - Limburg trade route. It is the ancestor of our traffic signs and was also built in 1566 by the Hauptmann family.

                                  To stop ok. The restaurant has two areas. At the front of the counter area, the menu offers rather pricey snacks and in the back area is the restaurant with nice dishes on the menu. The game and the asparagus are top. Personally, I can not recommend the snacks in front.

                                          "... The story of the Baraque Michel begins in 1798, when the 30-year-old Michel Schmitz from Sinzig settled in Herbiester-Jalhay. After getting lost in the Venn around 1808, he vowed to build a hut here after his rescue. Around 1830 Fischbach had the dilapidated buildings of the Baraque Michel restored and expanded with a barn and stable. At the behest of the rescued, Fischbach also had a chapel built in 1830-31 in honor of "Our Lady of Perpetual Help". Originally there was a lantern in the tower, which the Schmitz family lit every evening, and continued to do so until Vennstraße i.J. was completed. 1856. In 1885 the chapel was enlarged and a bell cast in Metz was hung in the turret, which was then rung by the Schmitz family. By 1842, 126 rescued people were entered in the "Iron Book". ..."
