In 1937 the city placed the 4.5 m tall statue "Torch Bearer" by Hermann Scheuertstuhl (1894-1982) on the 18 m high pillar that had already been erected for the inauguration of the Maschsee. Nazi art heroized "health" and "strength". The naked figure posted on a ball refers to the Hitler salute and the Olympic flame, which was first carried by the Olympics to the Games in 1936. The "Victory Column" took over the construction of the lake and glorified the Nazi state with the inscription on the base. In 1945 the swastika was knocked out.

After the founders of the "probably first canoe club in Germany ever", the rowing rider Karl Thiele, had already founded a Maschsee commission in 1904, the Hanoverian civil servants college decided in 1932, the construction of the Maschsee with the help of the government of the Reichsregierung job creation scheme program. After long planning, however, the construction was begun only at the time of National Socialism (Wikipedia).
