The church is the first church of the Kettwig Catholics after the Reformation. Before that, the believers were cared for by the abbey church in Werden. The striking church tower on the edge of the old town of Kettwig, together with the medieval tower of the Protestant church on the market, is a defining feature of the town. The church belongs to the parish of St. Peter and Laurentius and thus to the northernmost part of the Archdiocese of Cologne.

The church was built between 1826 and 1830 by district architect Otto von Gloeden. A look inside is worthwhile: there you'll find a Baroque high altar from the dissolved St. Catherine's Monastery in Düsseldorf-Gerresheim and a Klais organ with 24 stops, into which a historic organ from 1754 has been integrated as a Rückpositiv (rear positive).
