The "Elsum Castle" complex is particularly steeped in history. The hill on which it is built dates back to pre-Roman times. After 1503 the "stately new layout of the main castle" was built and in 1714 the outer castle, which, like the main layout, is surrounded by its own moat. The former four-tower castle was badly damaged in the last war and after 1953 it was rebuilt as a listed building by the owners, the von Negri family. see also the internet address birgelen-hats.de

The moated castle Elsum, created from a moth, was first mentioned in 1288. The main castle dates from 1503, the outer castle, also surrounded by moats, was built in the 18th century. The castle was badly damaged by the effects of the war in 1945 and was restored in accordance with the requirements of a historic monument between 1952 and 1955 by Baron von Negri, the father of the current owner. Elsum Castle emerged from a moth, which in turn had its origins in an estate. In 1280 Franko von Elsum was the owner. In 1288 he sided with the losers in the Battle of Worringen and so the Elsum farm came into Brabant possession. The Duke of Brabant enfeoffed the nobleman of Wassenberg with the estate in 1325. Often the owners changed in the following centuries and they eventually converted it into a castle.

The castle is a two-part complex, consisting of the core castle built at the beginning of the 16th century and the outer bailey, which was built at the beginning of the 17th century. The main castle stands on an irregularly square, artificially raised and walled island. It can be reached from the outer bailey via a bridge. The mansion has three towers. Also on the island next to the manor house is the neo-Gothic castle chapel, built in 1860.

During the Second World War, Elsum Castle was almost completely destroyed in January 1945. A complete reconstruction took place from 1952 and was completed in 1955.

The castle is still privately owned and cannot be visited.
