After the death of the popular Grand Duke Friedrich Franz II - the builder of the castle in Schwerin - his son commissioned the construction of a monumental statue. The object was financed through donations. It is considered the only historical equestrian statue in all of Mecklenburg.

The work of the Mecklenburg sculptor Ludwig Brunow was ceremoniously unveiled in 1893 - in the presence of high-ranking state guests such as Emperor Wilhelm II and Grand Duke Vladimir of Russia, as well as everyone who was of rank and name in the Mecklenburg court nobility. Inspired by the equestrian statues of Roman emperors and the Prussian Elector in Berlin, it was designed according to the typical, mostly military-influenced taste of the late 19th century. The figures of the Grand Duke and his horse stand on a marble base more than 4 m high.

The base is surrounded by allegories of the 4 ruler virtues: strength, justice, wisdom and faith. Two commemorative plaques show events from the reign of Friedrich Franz II - the construction of the new university building in Rostock and the Grand Duke's arrival in Schwerin in 1871.

The monument survived two wars and two dictatorships with great luck. It escaped being melted down for war purposes, the iconoclasm after the end of the war and being scrapped.

The spacious park south of the castle, connected by a bridge. It is worth staying, walking and cycling, which is certainly permitted. Generous lines of sight and small sections with lots of water are worth looking at and relaxing.

The castle garden stretches from Schwerin and Burgsee in the north to Faulen See in the south. The Kreuzkanal, which is centrally located in a line of sight to the castle, is located centrally. In the Greenhouse Garden, once designed by Peter Joseph Lenné in the style of an English landscape park, horticultural art from several centuries was shown at the BUGA 2009. Also on offer were the theme of grave design and monuments, a hedge garden and a children's playground based on historical models.

The garden of the 21st century comprised the area around Burgsee and was the entrance and reception area for the Federal Garden Show. The lake was expanded southwards by dredging from April to August 2007. The main attraction was a seemingly "floating meadow" due to its location between the lake and a moat and its rectangular shape with straight banks. This is connected by a bridge to the square on the bank, which is geometrically planted with robinia trees.

The castle garden of Schwerin Castle in Schwerin is one of the most beautiful parks in Mecklenburg. The castle garden was built between 1748 and 1756 on the south side of Schwerin Castle. The well-known Dutch gardener Jan Legeays built the castle garden in the French Baroque style. The appearance of the castle garden changed later on. By filling in some of the waterways, large lawns were created with promenades surrounded by trees and bushes.

The arcades of the Schwerin Palace Gardens offer the most beautiful shady spots in the entire baroque complex. In 1862, the court gardening director Theodor Klett had the magnificent tunnel structures made of hornbeams built, which lead from both sides of the equestrian monument to the northern end of the Kreuzkanal.
