After the waterworks was built at Krusestrasse 2, the water tower with a tank with a storage capacity of 350 cubic meters was built on the highest point in the municipality of Sande in 1907. A characteristic feature of this water tower is its tower head that projects outwards on a conical base with brickwork.
Just one year later, a restaurant opened in the tower and the viewing platform was made available to the public. The so-called Sander Dickkopp soon became known as a tourist restaurant far beyond the borders of Sande and is still the landmark of Lohbrügge today.
In the 1960s, former showman Willy Schmidt turned the restaurant in the water tower into a crowd puller. The small zoo with goats, a donkey, chickens and ponies, which Schmidt had created over the years, was particularly popular with children.
After 65 years, the water tower had become superfluous from a technical point of view.
It was shut down in 1972 and purchased by the city of Hamburg. After a long period of vacancy, the newly founded "Kulturgenossenschaft Wasserturm" leased the historic building in 1984 with the aim of saving it from decay. As a result, the Sander Dickkopp once again became an important cultural meeting place in Lohbrügge.
The water tower has been privately owned since 1994 with changing catering operators. A major renovation is still pending.

The Sander Dickkopp is a water tower in Hamburg-Lohbrügge on Richard-Linde-Weg 21f. Its Low German name is derived on the one hand from its shape (Dickkopp = thick head) and on the other hand from its location in the Sander Tannen forest area.
From the viewing platform on the roof you can see as far as Hamburg and far into the Vierlande and Marschlande on a clear day.

Lohbrügge has a water tower, which is a landmark on top of the forest ridge,
the Sander Tannen, at a height of 38 meters and was also a popular lookout point. The tower was nicknamed Sander Dickkopp because of its external shape.
It was completed in 1907 and supplied Lohbrügge with water until 1972.
Decommissioned, it was rededicated and was for a long time a well-known excursion and event location in private hands.
