The oldest visible component is the gothic nave from the period around 1300, built in the lower part of the building from Feldstein and further up from brick. The current brick choir, however, dates back to 1827. The church tower was even younger in 1902 Rebuilding in the style of the Neugotik new developed. The tower carries since 1992 again a copper spire, which had been destroyed at the end of World War II by heavy artillery shelling of the English. At first he gives a deceptive neo-Gothic character from a distance of the city and the church.

It is located in the middle of the so-called “Garden of Contemplation”, a demarcated area in the former north aisle, which is planted with rhododendrons and lined with pebbles of different colors. The character is intended to bridge the frightening past to a hopeful future.
The peace prayer moved to the artist's birthplace, Lauenburg on the Elbe, and was ceremoniously unveiled at the Mary Magdalene Church on December 1, 2017.
