The Wittelsbach Fountain is a monumental fountain on the north-western edge of downtown Munich, at the transition from Lenbachplatz to Maximiliansplatz. It was built in the years 1893 to 1895 according to plans by the sculptor Adolf von Hildebrand with the help of Erwin Kurz in the style of classicism.

The magnificent Wittelsbach Fountain, centrally located at the southeast end of the green strip of Maximilianplatz and Lenbachplatz, offers the viewer a very chic picture from all sides during the warm season. A great photo opportunity, especially when the sunlight breaks in the running water.

The floor plan for the fountain forms a 25 meter wide surrounding basin. It has the shape of a semicircle bulging out towards the square. The circle is drawn in on the back side, two rectangles on the left and right extend the pool. The main basin rises from it in the form of a stylized rocky landscape. Inside is a two-story, relief-decorated limestone bowl.

The main basin is flanked by two monumental sculptures made of Untersberg Hofbruch marble, in which the ancient theme of the depiction of people and animals can be found.

The one on the left shows a young man riding a fish-tailed water horse that, as it were, rises from the water. He holds a boulder with both hands and prepares to throw it. With the figure, Hildebrand created an allegory of the destructive power of water, an allusion to the unbridled natural force of the mountain streams in the headwaters of the Munich aqueduct, where they still carry debris with them.

The right figure shows an Amazon. She sits on a fish-tailed water bull rising from the waters. With her left hand she holds out a bowl of water towards the viewer. This figure symbolizes the fruitful and healing creative power that water has for people after it has been tamed and channeled.

The fountain is illuminated 24 hours a day except on sunny days.
