          It wasn't that easy for us two 82 year olds. From the dam back up to the Goldener Hahn, it is a bit exhausting even in humid weather. The stop at the "Golden Rooster" then made up for all the effort. Imitate!

              The Einsiedel drinking water dam is located near the Chemnitz town of Einsiedel. The decision to build it was made in July 1890 by the city of Chemnitz. Because the advancing industrialization and the resulting rapidly growing population demanded more and more water. This is how the oldest dam in Saxony and the second oldest of its kind in Germany was built between 1891 and 1894: a dam with a quarry stone wall. Within just four years, this grew to 180 meters in length, 22 meters in height and four meters in width at the crown. On June 14, 1894, the Einsiedel dam was officially opened. The two turrets on the dam wall, through which the two kings Albert and Friedrich August III. walked during their visit. In 1926 they were demolished. The nearby pavilion in which King Friedrich August III. had breakfast on March 3, 1905, no longer exists today....

                ... Just a few years after it was commissioned, the dam was no longer able to cover Chemnitz's water requirements. Between 1900 and 1913 the city had grown from 200,000 to 300,000 inhabitants. The nineteen-hain 1 and nineteen-hain 2 reservoirs built between 1905 and 1914 were therefore combined with the Einsiedel reservoir to form a network. In 1933 this network was expanded with the Saidenbach dam. Together they form the “Central Ore Mountains dam system”. They are networked by pipelines, tunnels, canals and natural watercourses. The Einsiedel dam serves as a compensation and buffer storage tank, which ensures optimal water transfer to the Einsiedel waterworks from the network. Even today, 100 percent of the drinking water in the city of Chemnitz comes from reservoirs.
