Another church that was built as a basilica in the transition from Romanesque to Gothic. You can easily distinguish it from the Marktkirch, as its towers are the same height. The ceiling inside was built as a flat beam ceiling.

The parish church of the new town on Mathildenbrunnen is the largest in the city and dominates with 72 m high towers all the rest. According to tradition, it was built on elms - tree trunks that were driven into the marshy soil of the Bode stream. From Romanesque origin only small remnants are preserved. The gothic hall church was built in several renovation phases and after changing plan designs. The interior is largely baroque. Like the Marktkirche, the organ was built by Röver. The Nikolaikirche is a Protestant parish church.

The history of the church begins with the construction of a basilica around 1200 and the subsequently built hall church in Romanesque architectural style, which can be clearly seen today from the mighty round windows of the towers. With the triumphant advance of the Gothic in Germany around 1250, the reconstruction of the church in the Gothic style that can still be seen began a little later.
What you can't see from the outside are the beautiful colored windows with motifs from the biblical story of the glazier Ferdinand Müller.
If you enter the church today via the west portal and step through the tower rooms, you will come across an imposing gallery from 1717. From here you have a wonderful view of the high altar (1712) and the pulpit (1731). There are also other highlights awaiting you, such as the reliquary (1360), the baptismal angel (1693), the organ (1914) and much more.
