The legend of the Finkenherd Quedlinburg

During a bird-catching trip in the year 919, the Saxon Duke Henry learned in the area around the Finkenherd that he was to be elected the new German king. This old legend is what makes the Finkenherd houses so famous and attractive to tourists and travelers. Unfortunately, other places also claim the honor of naming this place, where Henry accepted his election as emperor, as a place steeped in history. Nevertheless, it is certain that Henry I is to be regarded as the founder of the city of Quedlinburg. Henry I was the first German king and founder of the later Holy Roman Empire. Henry's successor was his son Otto from his second marriage to Mathilde. It is also proven that Henry liked to stay at the castle there. However, this castle was most likely located in a different place than the current castle. The Finkenherd Quedlinburg was first mentioned in documents in 1678. It is also known that in 1588 there was a restaurant called “Finkenkrug” at exactly this spot.
