On Duisburg's Mercator Island, directly on the Rhine, a bust rises up into the sky. It is the head of Poseidon, modeled on the sculptor Markus Lüpertz. The god of the ancient Greek world of legends, who was responsible for the seas, sits enthroned on a 4.50 meter high pedestal. Together with the base, the bronze figure with the name "The Echo of Poseidon" reaches a height of ten meters.
Markus Lüpertz created the sculpture on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of the port. The work of art was unveiled on May 27, 2016 in the presence of former Federal Chancellor Gerhard Schröder.
