The Emmerich Rhine Bridge is, at 803 m, the longest suspension bridge in Germany and, at 500 m, has the largest span of any bridge in Germany. It was built by Hein, Lehmann and Co. (Düsseldorf), then part of the Stumm Group.[1] The bridge was designed by the civil engineer Hellmut Homberg[2][3], and the architecture professor Heinrich Bartmann[4] contributed to the design.

The structure spans the Rhine between Kleve and Emmerich at a height of approximately 30 m at kilometer 853.2. It is the northernmost German Rhine bridge. The road overpass has two lanes and a hard shoulder as well as two sidewalks and is part of the federal highway 220. The Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia, Franz Meyers, laid the foundation stone on May 2, 1962. The Emmerich Rhine Bridge was opened on September 3, 1965.
