The founding building, a three-aisled tufa basilica with an eastern transept and the three-nave choir, was built from about 1040. In the west was a two-tower facade. During the reign of the Utrecht Bishop Bernold, the monastery was moved here by the parish church. Damage to the building is documented for 1145, parts of the longhouse and the west building of the Rhine were destroyed in 1137 and 1138. Further damage caused the Rhine in 1370, it remained only the eastern Langhausjoch, the choir, the Viert, the crypt and Nebenchöre received. In the 15th century, the original northern transept was replaced by a two-nave building with a north tower. At the end of the 15th century extensive renovations were carried out. At the same time, the round tower was built on the south side of the west end. Around 1600, the tail gable was built at the southern transept. In the early 19th century, the western aisle was canceled. The rood screen was removed and the floor level increased by about 110 cm. In the course of extensive renovation work, the aisle was rebuilt in 1874. In World War II, the building was destroyed in 1944 except for the surrounding walls. It was rebuilt in 1964 in a simplified form. During the thorough renovation from 1976 to 1989, the floor was restored to its original level, the vaults were recaptured in the gothic parts and the high choir was reconstructed.

This is an exceedingly special church. It was built in sections, namely a Romanesque part and a Gothic part. The Romanesque part was built around 1040 and the Gothic part around the 15th century. A particular church composed of two distinct styles. Here you can also visit the vaults from the 11th century. Elements from the treasury of the Sint-Vituskirche in Elten can also be admired.
