The Norbertine Abbey is a piece of living spirituality and (church) culture. About 30 brothers live here, whose day is structured by three common prayer times: morning prayer, the Eucharistic celebration (noon) and evening prayer. If you want, you can take part. Even if you are not a believer, the chants and prayers may give you a moment of rest and reflection.

On the site you will also find an adventure center dedicated to traditional handicraft activities. The old farm buildings now house a monastery café with its own brewery, a bakery and a monastery shop.

By the way: You can also stay in one of the guest rooms.

The Abbey of Averbode can look back on a rich history that has already spanned ten centuries. It was founded in 1134 on the initiative of Arnold II, Count of Loon. Agriculture is soon practiced, which ensures quality of life. Over the centuries, however, the abbey has undergone many trials: looting, fires, the plague,… At the end of the 18th century, it was even sold and demolished. From the 19th century it goes back uphill. Monastic life is resumed and the abbey becomes the hub of many activities: missionary work, a publishing house,… In the 20th century, the Premonstratensians founded several schools. Today, Averbode Abbey is looking full ahead, including a versatile basket of products and a brand new experience centre.

The Abbey of Averbode was founded in 1135 on the initiative of Arnold II, Count of Loon.

It was originally a 'double monastery' in which both men and women lived, in the beginning of the 13th century it was definitively 'deduplicated'.

It is an abbey of the Premonstratensians, also called Norbertines or Witheren and has 78 members, 45 of whom live and work in the abbey.

The Gothic gatehouse, built in the second half of the 14th century, is the oldest surviving part.

Today, the abbey houses a guest quarter, a local produce shop and a reflection center.

To the left of the abbey is the Maria Park with a series of original groups of statues.

In the summer months you can also enjoy a delicious ice cream in the lekdreef!

Averbode Abbey can look back on a rich history. It is founded in 1134. Agriculture is soon practiced, which ensures liveability. Over the centuries, however, the abbey has experienced many trials: looting, fires, the plague. It was even sold and demolished at the end of the 18th century.
From the 19th century it goes back uphill. Monastic life is resumed and the abbey becomes the hub of many activities: missionary work, a publishing house, etc.
Norbertines, the brothers of Averbode Abbey, belong to the order founded by Saint Norbert. That is why they are called Norbertines. Their white habit explains the nickname whiteeren, and they belong to the same order as Postel's Norbertines.
The abbey not only launched its basket of Averbode products, but also created a hospitable experience center on its domain where crafts are practiced again. Thus, old service buildings were given a new purpose: now they house an abbey café with home brewery, a cheese ripening factory and a bakery.

The Gates Halls used to be the stables for the visitors of the abbey in the 16th century.
The building has been completely restored. The name Poortzalen Antwerpen Limburg Brabant refers to the provincial borders that meet here at this location.
The halls are now used for meetings or temporary exhibitions.

The abbey of Averbode is located on the territory of three municipalities and provinces: Scherpenheuvel-Zichem (Flemish Brabant), Tessenderlo (Limburg) and Laakdal (Antwerp). Already in the Middle Ages, the abbey was located on the border of two principalities: the Duchy of Brabant and the County of Loon (absorbed by the Prince-Bishopric of Liège in the 14th century).

The area is mainly characterized by Diestian sandstone hills, extensive forests, heathland relics and inland dunes. The witness hills are located here as extensions of the Hageland, on the transition to the Kempen. They are the remains of the original Tertiary massif, which have been able to maintain themselves thanks to a protective layer. Responsible for this is the iron-containing glauconite present in the subsoil, which originated in a former (sub)tropical, marine environment. The weathering product of glauconite is limonite and has the property of cementing sand grains together, creating a hard, stony, coarse sand. Weather and wind have less influence on the hills. The subsoil was covered by yellow sand, mixed here and there with some loam. Both pure sandy soils and loamy sandy soils and sandy loam soils occur.

The abbey played a very important role in the development and support of agriculture and livestock farming in the area. Founded in 1134-35, it experienced a great heyday and important expansions during the 14th as well as the 17-18th century.

In the church of Averbode Abbey, the Averbode altarpiece can recently be admired again in the context of "Flemish masters in their place". The reredos was purchased 40 years ago by the Antwerp Museum of Antiquities. It is, like any altarpiece, the work of several painters, carpenters and the like. The sculptor or at least coordinator was Jacob van Cothem from Antwerp, where the protected Gothic reredos was purchased. It is a special work of great value and has been displayed in a climate cabinet since the end of November, opposite that other work of art, the painting by Jan Erasmus Quellinus: "Saint Augustine gives his rule to Norbertus". The altarpiece was removed from Averbode for about 150 years and originally stood at the altar of the abbey's previous Gothic church. You see some photos above (details, the cabinet with the complete work and a description plate).

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart

In 1877, the Brotherhood of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart was founded in the abbey. Thanks to this prayer association, new fields of activity were created for the abbey: the printing and publishing of many magazines in the first place, but also the Marian Park, the origin of the Eucharistic Crusades, and even our missions in Brazil and Denmark. The grace statue of Our Lady became the pole of attraction for many pilgrims in the abbey church.

Even today, this statue of the Virgin Mary is a place of refuge and resting place for many people. A new candle chapel was installed in 2018. The many burning candles testify to the sorrows and joys that visitors want to entrust to God, through Mary's intercession.

Once inside the Norbertine abbey of Averbode peace and quiet reigns (except on busy days). There are still some beautiful buildings in the courtyard: the Gothic gatehouse from the second half of the 14th century is the oldest.
The beauty of the graceful abbey church attracts everyone's attention.
Be sure to take a look inside. The interior is all 'Splendour'.
The large mirror pond in the courtyard is an added value on hot summer days. The mirror pond is only ten centimeters deep and is filled with rainwater from the roofs of the abbey buildings.

Next to the gatehouse are the former horse stables for guests from the first half of the sixteenth century.

Downstairs is now the Antwerp room where groups can organize meetings.

The top floor - with an impressive roof truss - houses the Limburg hall where concerts, exhibitions and lectures take place.

The buildings that now form the Averbode Abbey are the result of a centuries-long and fascinating construction history. The only constant in this history is the brick wall around the abbey domain. It probably dates from the early period: the 12th century! It encloses an area of 9 hectares and is the oldest monument of the abbey. This wall is in danger! Thorough restoration works are required.
