In 2016, Johannisfriedhof was voted the most beautiful cemetery in Germany (it was me in 2015, too). A bike path also passes the cemetery.
Created as a classic park cemetery, the Johannisfriedhof still has lush plant strips between the tombs, an extensive lawn axis and a curved trail. In addition, the rich old trees testify to the then generous facilities. Especially in the so-called "Arboretum" the visitor will find a variety of old rhododendrons, Thuja and Chamaecyparis species. To preserve these plants, the Arboretum 1986 was decommissioned.
Arboretum
Often the Johannisfriedhof is used as a welcome place for a walk because of its adjacent location to the botanical garden and the animal park Olderdissen and the proximity of the city forest. The citizens and visitors of the city will find here a quiet place away from the noise and bustle of the city of Bielefeld.
Just like the adjoining cemetery of the Jewish religious community, the Johannisfriedhof was listed as a historical monument in 1986.
The complex is characterized by a variety of historically and artistically valuable tombs, one finds extensive family tombs with magnificent monuments and elaborate borders. Many well-known Bielefeld citizens, manufacturers and politicians have found their final resting place here.
