The municipal Johannisfriedhof cemetery is located on the eastern slope of the Kahler Berg, which is part of the Teutoburg Forest. The cemetery was established in 1874 as an addition to the old cemetery near Jahnplatz, which was becoming increasingly small due to the growing population. As a classic park cemetery, the Johannisfriedhof is dominated by wide green strips, a wide lawn axis and numerous rhododendron and thuja species.

In 2016, Johannisfriedhof was voted the most beautiful cemetery in Germany (it was me in 2015, too). A bike path also passes the cemetery.
Created as a classic park cemetery, the Johannisfriedhof still has lush plant strips between the tombs, an extensive lawn axis and a curved trail. In addition, the rich old trees testify to the then generous facilities. Especially in the so-called "Arboretum" the visitor will find a variety of old rhododendrons, Thuja and Chamaecyparis species. To preserve these plants, the Arboretum 1986 was decommissioned.
