St. Nicolai, consecrated to St. Nicolaos, the patron saint of boatmen and seamen. Financed and built by order of the patricians and guild of boatmen. The landmark of the water district in Lüneburg. Also called the "Citizens' Basilica". Construction began in 1407.

Rises up mightily and has a special structural feature, thanks to an architectural trick, it looks longer from the inside than it is when you look at the choir. On the other hand, you have the feeling that everyone is sitting in the first row. It is almost as high as it is long.

The church belongs to the basilica type, while St. Johannes and St. Michaelis are hall churches. The model was St. Marien in Lübeck and St. Nicolai in Wismar. Particularly impressive is the approximately 7.20 meter wide and 28.70 meter high Gothic central nave with the eight-pointed star vault, which is unique in northern Germany, and with its medieval character.

The high altar comes from the St. Lamberti Church, which was demolished in 1861, and is accordingly called the Lamberti Altar. Behind the altar are the display panels of the Heiligenthaler altar, with what is probably the oldest picture of Lüneburg.

The St. Nicolai Church is a three-aisled basilica, construction of which began in 1407. The central nave is twice as high as the side aisles and higher than the total length of the nave. The central nave is spanned by an eight-pointed star vault, which is unique in northern Germany. Due to numerous restorations, the church is largely influenced by the 19th century. The church tower, completed in 1587, for example, had to be demolished in 1831 due to its dilapidation. The 98 m high new tower, based on a neo-Gothic design, was not completed until 1895. The interior of the church has retained its beautiful medieval appearance and contains important treasures of Gothic painting and carving.
