      From the 16th century until the middle of 1759, the "High Court" on Lechlumer Holz served as the main court of justice for the Principality of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel.
      The facility is located on a hilltop (Galgenberg) above the Oker on the northwestern edge of the Lechlumer Holz.
      At the time of the Guelph Dukes Heinrich Julius (1589–1613) and August the Younger (1579–1666), numerous “witches” and “sorceresses” were also killed here at the stake or by beheading

            The High Court on the “Lecheln Holze” (name at the time) was first mentioned in 1603 as the “Ducal Main Court”. At that point, however, it must have existed for a long time. Its name derives from the deserted village of Lechede. The place was originally known as "Stöckheimer Streithorn", which, since it was forested, was then called "Stöckheimer Streithorst".

            The place of execution consisted of two adjacent platforms surrounded by ditches and ramparts. They measured approx. 48 × 18.5 m and each had several gallows, witches' poles and wheels. For more than 160 years, the death sentences for delinquents from the principality and the city of Braunschweig were carried out there. At the time of the Welf dukes Heinrich Julius (1589-1613) and August the Younger (1579-1666), numerous "witches" and "sorceresses" found their deaths at the stake or by beheading. An old calendar notes: “In 1590 many witches and sorceresses were branded in Wolfenbüttel and Groningen, who were brought there from all over the country. From the state of Brunswick, Wolfenbüttelschen, Göttingen and Calenbergischen parts, all were brought to Wolfenbüttel, as well as all wrongdoers, as manslayers, thieves, murderers and the like, were all justificated in Wolfenbüttel. […] And it was often burned 10, 12 and more in one day that the place in Wolfenbüttel in front of the Lecheln Holzze could be seen from the magic stakes as a small forest, and that didn’t only last in this one, but also in the following ones years" hanged people were left hanging on the gallows as a deterrent.
