The moat at the Großer Zimmerhof belonged to the area of the then so-called freedom, between Dammfeste and Alter Heinrichstadt.
The weir from 1858 was used to compensate for the water masses entering here and thus to regulate the water levels in the Okerarmen Dammfeste and Alter Heinrichstadt.

Today's town of Wolfenbüttel owes its name to the former moated castle of the same name. The settlement area around Wolfenbüttel Castle, the district around the residential castle that still stands today, was later named Dammfestung after a dam that had been built around the castle in the swampy area of the Oker river. This dam fortress and the various districts of the old and new Heinrichstadt, Auguststadt and today's Juliusstadt, which together with the dam fortress have borne the city name Wolfenbüttel since 1747, separated and flowed through artificially created arms of the Okerstrom. Today, with a few exceptions, these Wolfenbüttel waterways no longer exist. A signposted tour should help clarify the former location and shape of the ditches and canals in the city area.

The still existing Graben am Grossen Zimmerhof belonged to the area of the so-called Freiheit (between the dam fortress and Alter Heinrichstadt). Today's lock house with weir from 1858 is located on the site of the older main lock. This served to regulate the relationship of the water masses of the here entering Okerarmes in Dammfeste and Heinrichstadt to each other.
While the waters of the eastern part of the ditch fed the Great Canal, the lock or trench and the long or broken ditch, the western part originally led to the ditch. The trench, which was wider until the 18th century, served as a point of contact for the wooden rafts from the Harz.
In the area between Graben and Wall (at the location of today's road south above the Grabens) and in the area of today's Zimmerhofstraße, the wood was further processed by the carpenters, which led to the designation of the street.
