The Hradcany district includes the complex of buildings of Prague Castle. The castle palace, churches, monasteries and palaces impressively reflect more than a thousand years of history of the Czech state. In the 14th century Emperor Charles IV made Prague Castle the center of the Holy Roman Empire and St Vitus Cathedral the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Prague. The President of the Czech Republic has resided here since 1918 and the President of the Czech Republic since 1993.
