            About us - history

            On April 1, 1885, the city of Chemnitz acquired the Küchwald for a price of 460,000 marks. Since 1888 the Küchwald has been transformed into a forest park. From 1900 the path system that is still used today was created. The fairground was expanded to its current size. By 1909, the new large Küchwaldschänke was built at the north-west end of the fairground (today an open-air stage). At the end of World War II, bombs destroyed this popular Chemnitz day trip destination.

            It was not until 1952 that the Chemnitz city council decided to transform the Küchwald into a cultural park. This plan also provided for the construction of a pioneer railway. The railway was planned along the Küchwaldring (crossing twice).

            There should be turning loops on Leipziger Strasse and at today's school camp. A total of 3 stops were planned. The apprentices at the Reichsbahn repair shop in Chemnitz had already suggested building a streamlined train set themselves.

            Many projects had to be abandoned very quickly. The pioneer railway was originally to be built with a gauge of 381 mm. However, the corresponding material could not be obtained, so that a transition had to be made to field or rubble railways with a gauge of 600 mm.

            On March 14th, as part of the "National Construction Work", construction began for the future 2.3 km long track. The goal was to hand over the pioneer railway on May 1, 1953. After 2000 hours of work, the Reichsbahn repair shop was able to complete the finished locomotive and wagons on schedule and presented them to the public on May 1, 1953.
