The Schusterstein Tunnel was built between 1900 and 1902 during the construction of the Chemnitz Küchwald-Wechselburg railway line. It passes under part of the Schusterstein massif, which is responsible for the beautiful meander (loop) of the Chemnitz River. Today, with its bridge-tunnel-bridge combination, it is one of the most beautiful sections of the Chemnitz Valley Cycle Path following renovations from 2015 to 2016.

The cycle path and the river are surrounded by forests that extend across the valley walls.

From the confluence of the Würschnitz and Zwönitz rivers, the Chemnitz Valley Cycle Path currently stretches a total length of approximately 30 kilometers to Göritzhain. The "Chemnitz Valley Cycle Path" association is responsible for more than 14 kilometers of this section, some of which still needs to be constructed.

Built as an important part of the Chemnitz/ Küchwald - Wechselburg railway line in just two years (1900-1902), the tunnel passes under part of the Schusterstein massif, which includes a nature reserve of 13.32 hectares. It is located on the northern outskirts of Chemnitz on a bend in the Chemnitz river.
After its renovation (2015-2016) the tunnel is one of the most beautiful parts of the Chemnitztal cycle path.

The Schusterstein Tunnel is located in a nature reserve (NSG). The Schusterstein is located in the municipalities of Lichtenau and Taura in the Central Saxony district and in the independent city of Chemnitz in Saxony.
The NSG covers an area of 13.32 hectares and is located on the northern outskirts of Chemnitz on a loop of the Chemnitz river.
