The history of Lake Werdenberg is closely linked to the history of the noble family of Werdenberg and the County of Werdenberg.
In 1803, Werdenberg became part of the newly founded Canton of St. Gallen. Buchs retained Lake Werdenberg. Werdenberg Castle and the village of Werdenberg were awarded to the municipality of Grabs.
