"The small city museum is located in a former monastery building. It is the only museum on Rügen that contains the historical development of Rügen from early history to the 19th century. Constantly changing special exhibitions enrich the offer and invite you to visit.
The monastery complex, to which the monastery courtyard belongs, was consecrated in 1193 together with St. Mary's Church. At that time 20 nuns from Roskilde lived here. After the Reformation, the monastery was dissolved and converted into an evangelical virgin monastery. Life in these walls was reserved for ladies of noble birth. After a fire in the city, the two former monastery buildings that still exist today were built in 1732. Since the completion of the monastery courtyard in 2004, tombstones have been erected here, which serve as silent witnesses to the fact that Bergen's cemetery was located around St. Mary's Church until 1829.
The demonstration workshop next to the city museum is another beautiful detail in the historically valuable ensemble of the monastery courtyard. Here the local craftsmen like to be looked over their shoulders at work. From May to September, the popular flea and craft markets take place monthly in the monastery courtyard. Typical Rügen products such as ceramics, candles, jams and liqueurs as well as souvenir items can be purchased on site." Source: stadt-bergen-auf-ruegen.de
