You can see the skeletons of dead spruces, which cannot survive this climate change, in the immediate vicinity of the exotic trees. "... The Burgholz Arboretum in the NRW Forest and Wood State Enterprise, with its area of around 250 hectares and around 100 different deciduous and coniferous tree species from almost every continent in the world, is the largest area in Germany for growing foreign tree species.
At the beginning of the 1970s it was run as an experimental cultivation area for foreign conifers by the state forestry administration, but from the end of the 1990s the aspect of the forestry teaching garden was brought to the fore and the forest areas of the foreign tree species have been referred to as an "arboretum" (arbor Latin = tree) since 1999. Burgholz now plays a leading role again in the association of forestry experimental areas in NRW. The oldest plantations are now around 55 years old.
Three short circular hiking trails - Trees of the World - give you impressions of individual tree species from North America, Asia and Europe.
A longer hiking trail - Forests of the World - gives you impressions of closed forest stands as somewhat exotic landscapes The individual tree species are presented along the hiking trails through a pictorial representation of the habitus and a distribution map. ..."
