Dam built from 1686 based on plans by Vauban to defend the city. Now beautiful covered bridge surmounted by an outdoor promenade with nice views of the city.

The weir was originally built as a defensive structure, allowing downstream areas to be flooded if necessary.

Today, there's a pedestrian crossing over the Ill River on two levels: inside or on the roof. It's refreshingly cool inside in summer, and you can admire baroque stone figures in some niches. From the top, you'll enjoy one of the most beautiful panoramic views of the Old Town. 👍

On the northern side of the Passage-Georges-Frankhauser is located directly below the Museum of Modern Art, a modern and reasonably priced parking garage. From here you can pass through the Passage-Georges-Frankhauser, cross the River Ill and get directly into the beautiful district of La Petite France. In the passage itself, historical sandstone figures of Strasbourg's buildings are kept to be restored and mglw. to be brought back to their old places.

According to the plans of the famous military architect Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban (1633-1707), at the end of the 17th century, the Barrage Vauban, a 13-berth weir, was built. In the case of an attack, the building allowed the flooding of the plain south of the city, as happened in the war 1870/71. On the weir later a roof terrace was built, from which the view over the Ponts Couverts to the Minster Tower can wander, one of the most beautiful panoramas of Strasbourg.

The three bridges and four towers formed a defensive structure here in the 13th century which together with a city wall formed the protection for Strasbourgh. The bridges here were covered with a wooden roof until the 18th century. The towers were used as prisons until 1832.

The covered bridge is not special but the view from the roof of the Barrage Vauban gives you a fairytale view. It's a pleasure to be here. Beautiful panorama with three towers and bridges (Ponts Couverts) where the Líll flows under. You can enjoy the Barrage from the roof, free of charge. In the barage is an underpass with old statues.

The Vauban dam (Barrage Vauban) was built in 1690 by its legendary namesake, the military engineer Sebastien Vauban. It was designed to be not only the city's most important lock, but also an integral part of the Strasbourg fortifications. The dam guards the southwestern entrance to the Grande Île and covers the entire width of the River Ill. With its help, in the event of an attack, the entire southern end of the city can be flooded.

The Vauban Barrage is simultaneously a weir, a covered bridge, and a promenade with a beautiful view over the (no longer covered) Ponts Couverts to the cathedral. In the past, it also served as a defensive structure over the river. At the end, you can choose whether to take the path through the complex, sheltered from rain and sun—a nice way to cool off in temperatures over 30°C—or climb the stairs to the top and enjoy the view of Strasbourg from the promenade. There are also public restrooms at one end.
