A nice little castle. There is no opportunity to visit the castle. It is privately owned. But it's not just the castle that's worth seeing, the public park around the castle is also worth seeing. There are many hiking trails.

The castle in Rastede was for a long time the residence of the counts and grand dukes of the house Oldenburg and is still family property. The non-public building is an example of Oldenburg Classicism. The castle in Rastede was once the summer residence of the Grand Dukes of Oldenburg. It stands on ancient foundations, because where the castle building extends today was once the abbot's house of the important Rastede Benedictine monastery from 1091. This monastery was the cultural center of the old county of Oldenburg for many centuries. Some valuable remains of this period provide eloquent testimony to the importance of the old monastery, such as the famous illustrated manuscript of the Sachsenspiegel, which was created here on the spot, or the Rasteder Klosterchronik, which marks the beginning of Oldenburg historiography. The castle served as a summer residence for the Grand Dukes of Oldenburg until the end of the monarchy in Germany after the November Revolution of 1918.
The castle is still owned by the family today and is unfortunately not open to the public.

Duke Peter Friedrich Ludwig acquired the former monastery estate in 1777, had the palace built as a country house in the neoclassical style, and in 1784 commissioned the landscape architect C.F. Bosse, son of the court gardener in Wolfenbüttel, to create an English garden.

Today, the park serves as a local recreation area for countless walkers every day, as well as an attractive running route for joggers and Nordic walkers. In addition to the palace, prominent landmarks include the Hirschtor (Deer Gate) at the southern end of the park and the large tournament grounds in the north with the adjacent Ellernteich (Ellern Pond). The tournament grounds in particular are also the venue for various renowned major events such as the “Vintage Race Days” classic car race, the “Spectaculum” medieval festival, the “Rasteder Music Days” with guests from all over the world, the “Oldenburg State Tournament” equestrian event and the “International Grass Track Race” for motorcycles.
