An English-style landscape park.

Sights such as the Ellernteich with its water fountain or art objects such as the horse head sculptures in the castle park in Rastede can be easily discovered on foot or by bike. Four well-signposted circular hiking trails as well as two distance routes up to 10 km long lead active visitors through the park. The history of the castle park can be traced back to the time of the medieval monastery forest. After an eventful history, the Rastede summer residence began in 1777 with the future Duke Peter Friedrich Ludwig.

Over the next 100 years, the Grand Dukes of Oldenburg expanded their summer residence and created an English-style landscape park covering a total area of around 300 hectares. The community leased around 100 hectares of the park area from the House of Oldenburg.

The Grand Dukes of Oldenburg expanded their summer residence in Rastede over a period of 130 years. They expanded the complex to an area of over 300 hectares, created ponds, winding paths, spacious meadows and visual axes extending far into the surrounding area, modeled on English parks, as a “walk-in painting”. Well-signposted circular hiking trails and two up to 10 km long distance routes for athletes lead active visitors through the park.
