The ruins of the French Church in Halberstadt are now a memorial to the victims of the air raids on Halberstadt in 1945.

The French Church on Antoniusstrasse was built between 1713 and 1718 by Huguenots who had fled France for religious reasons.

Until 1818 the rococo building was used as a church according to its original purpose.

Due to the union with the German-Reformed community, the church stood empty in the following years, was sold in 1824 and served as a storage room for various goods for a long time.

On April 8, 1945, around 70 people died in the air raid shelter of the former church.

The ruins of the French Church have been a memorial to the victims of the air raids on Halberstadt since 1968 according to plans by Walter Gemm.

An inscription on the steps to the church ruins says:

“On April 8, 1945, more than 1,700 people fell victim to the bombing of Halberstadt.

About 70 of them died in that church.”

Every year on April 8th there is a commemoration event at the ruins of the French Church.
