The building of the church is documented in 1186, but this certainly as a new building after the destruction of the old city church by the turmoil of war under Heinrich d. Löwen 1179. The patronage of St. Martin goes back to the French influence in the Middle Ages.

The west building with the two towers of different heights is traditionally the property of the town of Halberstadt and its landmark. The mighty twin towers were built at the beginning of the 14th century and served as a fire watchtower.
