The castle gate to the old town is now the entrance to the castle garden on the site of the former Rothenburg Castle. Well worth seeing!
The castle was built in 970 by the Counts of Rothenburg, but this old family of counts died out and the castle and the settlement that had since been created passed to the Hohenstaufen around 1116. The new lord of the castle expanded the Counts' Castle by adding the so-called front castle. This kept it safe from enemies, but the earthquake of 1356 destroyed it, along with the wall on the valley side.
The castle gate from the 12th century with the highest and oldest tower in Rothenburg and the adjacent massive castle wall were preserved.
