    The Cathedral of the Assumption of Mary with its striking tower is the landmark of the South Tyrolean capital of Bolzano. Since 1964, the parish church of Bolzano has also been the bishop's church and co-cathedral of the then newly created diocese of Bolzano-Brixen, although the cathedral chapter remained in Brixen.

      The mighty Gothic building (Cathedral of the Diocese of Bozen-Brixen) is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary. Its church tower has a 65 m high openwork spire made of sandstone. The project comes from Burghard Engelberg from Augsburg, it was realized by the Swabian architect and sculptor Hans Lutz von Schussenried (1501-1519).

We are talking about the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, the showpiece of the town's parlor, Waltherplatz.
        The first floor plan goes back to early Christian times, in the 11th century a rectangular church in Romanesque style was built and consecrated in 1180 under the name of the Assumption of Mary.
        In the 14th century, the Augsburg builder brothers, Schiche, gave the basilica a Gothic dress made of reddish (Val Gardena) and yellow (Unterlandler) sandstone. The gargoyles and artfully chiseled balustrades are reminiscent of Notre Dame of Paris and are masterpieces of high Gothic architecture.

                                "The cathedral at Waltherplatz in Bolzano, whose construction began around 1300, is considered the landmark of South Tyrol's capital.
                                The history of the majestic cathedral at Waltherplatz in the center of Bolzano goes back to the 5th century, when an early Christian basilica was built in place of a "domus". Today's Cathedral of the Assumption of Mary with its rich decorations stands on the remains of this basilica. The late Gothic construction began around 1300: it was only completed two centuries later, in 1519, with the construction of the 65 m high church tower according to plans by the Augsburg cathedral master builder Burkhard Engelberg and Hans Lutz von Schussenried.
                                A special feature are the gargoyles and balustrades on the outside, which are reminiscent of Notre Dame in Paris. Inside, the Cathedral of the Assumption of Mary houses numerous works of art, such as the Chattering Mother of God, the Crucifixion fresco on the tower wall and the Baroque Chapel of Grace. The gates, such as the Romanesque The Lion Portal and the Leitacher Törl are beautifully decorated. Right next door, in the old provost's office of the cathedral, the cathedral treasury with its treasures can be visited.
