Gymnicher mill

The Gymnicher Mühle is one of the best preserved mills in the Rhein-Erft-Kreis. Most of the formerly more than 120 water mills have long since expired or are used differently. Through the commitment of the Mühlenverband Rhein-Erft-Rur e. V., the historic building complex was extensively renovated.

The first written mention is from the year 1315: The lords of Gymnich received the mill as a fief of the abbot of Siegburg. As a so-called spell mill they were entitled to the sole water right. The Gymnicher mill was operated as a grain and oil mill and originally had two unterschlachtige water wheels. In 1563 it was relocated to its present location, directly to the main run of the Erft.

In the late 19th century, for the first time plans came up to create the Erft below the Gymnicher mill a new riverbed: The old arm of the Erft became the "Little Erft". The combined residential and mill house is now a listed building. Although the technical equipment was already removed from the mill in 1948, the mill wheel remained as a powerful witness of the former use.

Hidden behind the Bliesheimer mill lies this little paradise for MTBers. The Bliesheimer Mühler is signposted and easy to find, as it is close to the Erft. If you want to make your Erft Tour a bit more exciting, you only need to find the inconspicuous entrance from there (look for a small sign that describes the gravel pit as a habitat for rare animal species) and find yourself in a disused pit, the Steep slopes and gentle runs on various surfaces (mainly gravel, who would have thought it) offers.
