The Speyer Cathedral - officially the Domkirche St. Maria und St. Stephan - is an expression of imperial power at the time of the Salians and was built in opposition to the Abbey of Cluny as a building representing the papal opposition. Under the Salian Emperor Konrad II it was to become the largest church in the West. The plan of the basilica, which was often adopted in the Rhineland, is characterized by the balance of the eastern and western parts of the building and by the symmetrically placed towers that frame the volume formed by the nave and the transept. The construction, which began in 1030, became the first consistently vaulted church building in Europe in 1077 at the instigation of Henry IV. In the years that followed, its layout exerted a major influence on the development of Romanesque architecture of the 11th and 12th centuries.

Construction of the cathedral began between 1024 and 1030. In 1061 the largest church building in the world at that time was completed and the cathedral was consecrated. In 1981, the Romanesque church building was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

According to Wikipedia, a legend says that Konrad laid the foundation stone for the Limburg monastery (near Bad Dürkheim) early in the morning, then rode to Speyer with his wife Gisela and his entourage to build the foundation stone for the cathedral and the Saint Johannes monastery on the same day to lay the later St. Guido pen. In order to bring the amount of stone and wood required for the construction to Speyer, a canal was built from the Palatinate Forest to the Rhine. This channel could mean the relocation of the Speyerbach, which was moved a few kilometers to the south in the Middle Ages at the latest to supply Speyer.

The cathedral in Speyer can be seen from afar and is characterized by the reddish sandstone typical of the Palatinate (although yellower sandstone from the Odenwald was also used). Once part of the cloister of the Speyer Cathedral. The cloister was cemetered by a fire in 1689 and not rebuilt. The "remains" received a roof and are now next to the cathedral on the adjacent cathedral garden. See also: de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speyerer_Dom
