    Adjacent to a castle complex on the high eastern bank of the Neisse, the city of Görlitz was founded around 1220 in the area of today's Untermarkt as a trading center for long-distance traders who exported cloth and the cloth dye woad from Thuringia to Eastern Europe and brought back furs, wax and honey.

            The original name of this square, first mentioned in 1305, is simply Market. In 1403 the name Niedermarkt appears in the archives. The name Ring, which existed between 1340 and around 1600, probably comes from Silesian. The part north of the Zeile separating the square was also temporarily called the Alter Markt, Fischmarkt or Herringsmarkt.

            The country people selling goods mainly stood in the northern part of the square, while the artisans in the southern part. It was not until 1864 that the weekly market moved to Elisabethstrasse.

            The block of houses in the middle of the square is called Zeile or Mittelzeil. A passageway from east to west led through this block of houses; this no longer exists today. This passageway provided access to the southern grocers. Later, the houses were opened to the south side of the square, because the rich merchants (also spice and silk merchants) had their stalls on the south side.

                The brewery, which was in operation until the 20th century, was one of the most distinguished buildings in the city, where numerous sovereigns stayed overnight. After the great city fire in 1525, the building was merged from several house units and rebuilt by the city's master builder Wendel Roskopf in 1526, incorporating the previous building. It is considered the oldest bourgeois Renaissance house in Germany with a year date. Extensive renovations were carried out in 1617.

                The magnificent Renaissance building on the Görlitz Untermarkt now houses the Silesian Museum with 2000 square meters of exhibition space.

                    The town hall of Görlitz has been the site of municipal administration, power and jurisdiction since around 1350; in 1369 it was first documented as a town hall in a document from the Görlitz council.
                    Its magnificent interior dates back to the Renaissance period.
                    It consists of several connected buildings at Untermarkt 6–8 and is now the seat of several offices.
                    The town hall tower was extended at the beginning of the 16th century, and in 1524 it was given a clock with two dials, which was converted to a twelve-hour clock by Bartholomäus Scultetus in 1584.
