The Obermarkt is the largest square in Görlitz's old town. It is bordered on the east by the Gothic Trinity Church and on the west by the Reichenbach Tower (background). Luxuriously designed town houses line the area. Among the many baroque houses, the house at Obermarkt 29, built in 1718, stands out in particular, where August the Strong, Tsar Alexander I and Napoleon, among others, have stayed.

Incidentally, the Reichenbacher Turm is the highest surviving fortified tower. It got its current appearance in 1484. As a lookout tower, it is a special tourist attraction. Behind the tower is the Kaisertrutz, a fortification built in 1490, whose round shape is reminiscent of the Castel Sant'Angelo in Rome.

At the end of the 13th century, a wall ring encircled the city, which today represents the oldest part of the city of Görlitz as Historic Old Town.
