These small lakes in the NSG Schmoel are located directly on the natural beach cycle path. A narrow cycle path leads along the lakes to the coastal section.

Interested visitors can reach the NSG Schmoel from Kiel or Lütjenburg via the B 502. From Gut Schmoel, Stakendorf and Camping Hohenfelde, a hiking trail leads towards the protected area. A walk or a bike ride from Schönberger or Stakendorfer Strand on the dike towards Schmoel is also recommended. The path in Schmoel is part of the Baltic Sea Cycle Route, which extends continuously from Lübeck to the Flensburg Fjord. (Source: NABU)

At the end of 1990, the approx. 50 hectare nature reserve "Strandseelandschaft Schmoel" was created directly on the Baltic Sea coast to compensate for the use of the landscape by reinforcing the dyke off the Probsteier coast . The dynamism of this stretch of coast is also visible through the tree trunks lying in the Baltic Sea flushing area, as well as the cleared tree trunks, which point to a completely different coastline in the past. After a short time of the dike back, vegetation typical of the coast appeared again with species such as sea kale, sea mustard, sea thistle, sea plantain, chickweed and stonecrop. A diverse stock of bushes and trees has developed on the former arable land. The Foundation for Nature Conservation supports this development through extensive grazing with Angus cattle.

The nature reserve is supplied with fresh water from the mainly agricultural hinterland, which unfortunately also brings a lot of nutrients and sediments with it. The aim is to improve the ecological situation by setting up sand traps and banks along the Scheidebach, which flows into the NSG. In order to prevent a backwater into the surrounding usable areas, a regular runoff to the Baltic Sea is maintained.

Fortunately, the eastern beach lake has been spared these nutrient loads. A valuable and unique community with specialized animal and plant species was able to develop there. The large populations of the thousand-leaf beetle and the occurrence of the rare Caspian tumbler beetle are examples here.

I live there and still enjoy the tour again and again.
It's just worth taking a detour from the main road down towards the beach. But absolutely unsuitable for narrow tires such as racing bikes. A large part of the route literally leads over hill and dale. Even during or after rain, it is not necessarily suitable for people who are unsure or have problems with bumps. Even if you have to stop unexpectedly because of oncoming traffic, your feet can unexpectedly come to a halt on slippery stones. I work in the local rescue service and we regularly see significantly more than minor injuries there. Otherwise: absolutely recommended
