The Hill (Helle) is the longest watercourse in the High Fens, rises near Baraque Michel and flows into the Weser in Eupen's lower town. Formerly, in Roman times, it functioned as a border river. Then later, in the period from 1815 to 1919, it represented the border between Prussia and the Netherlands or Germany and Belgium. Today it forms the border between the German-speaking Eupen and the French-Wallonian part of Sourbrodt/Robertville.

More than worth it from start to finish. There are many parts with boardwalks and sometimes it can indeed be wet. But you can often solve that by walking just a little higher. The path often takes you to the banks of the Helle, even with parts where you can sit on a rock or some pebbles and refresh yourself. There is also a shady area with rock formations. Other times you walk through ferns and heath, then there are root paths (nothing too difficult) and sometimes the area is rather open with views. In short: a lot of variety. It is usually a bit busier here. The Helle itself has its source a little further away and small side streams flow into it in various places. Ultimately it flows into the Vesdre.

The water from the peatlands is acidic and contains few minerals. This significantly limits the development of aquatic life in the streams; fish and flowering plants are absent. A few algae and mosses as well as some small invertebrates can exist in the water. The water also carries away plant-based organic compounds (saponins and unsaturated fatty acids), which form foam due to the movement of the water. The "oil film" on parts of the soil is also biological and does not indicate environmental pollution.

The catchment area of the Hill already shows a clear valley deepening. This meant that the stream became a clearly definable border early on. For the Romans, the Hill was the border between their administrative areas of Tongeren and Cologne. From the Middle Ages to the end of the 18th century, the duchies of Luxembourg and Limburg bordered each other here.
