I visited Rothenburg (north of Philippsbourg) as a pure castle tour in one day together with the castle ruins Wasigenstein, Luetzelhardt and Waldeck.

The Rothenburg (also Rotes Schlössel, French Château de Rothenbourg) is the ruin of a medieval rock castle near the municipality of Philippsbourg in the Moselle department. It has been in ruins since it was destroyed in the 14th century. The castle is located on a sandstone cliff at a height of 400 meters on a foothill of the Rothenberg. Only small remains of the walls, chambers and terrain, such as the cistern and moat, remain of the castle.

The castle was supposedly built in the 10th century by the bishop of Strasbourg. However, it was first mentioned in a document in the 12th century, when it was named as a fief of the Bishop of Strasbourg. At this point it was handed over to Lorraine and Zweibrücken-Bitsch. Since the lord of the castle, Harnach von Weißkirchen, was guilty of mugging, the castle was destroyed by Strasbourg troops in 1309, 1360 or 1369 and was never rebuilt. (Source: Wikipedia)
