The Elbphilharmonie is the architectural flagship and flagship of HafenCity.

The boldness of its design has drawn comparisons to the Sydney Opera House. The core of the building is the brick cube of an old warehouse. A wave-shaped structure made of glass and steel was placed on top of the cube, rising to a height of 110 meters at its highest point. This makes the Elbphilharmonie the tallest inhabited building in the city.

But it's not just the architecture that's groundbreaking; the two concert halls are also the best in the world. Initially, the people of Hamburg were extremely enthusiastic about the mammoth project. But after the groundbreaking ceremony in 2007, the initial euphoria gave way to great skepticism.

This was primarily due to the dramatically rising construction costs and the constant postponements of completion. The Elbphilharmonie finally opened on January 11, 2017, and quickly became Hamburg's new landmark.

What else can one say about the Elbphilharmonie? It is the new landmark of Hamburg and you can currently still visit the plaza free of charge (on site). If you book a ticket online, a reservation fee is due. From up here you have a great view of the Elbe and Hamburg's old town
