Hamburg's new, not uncontroversial landmark is an expression of the city competition that has gripped many metropolises since the 1990s. Around the turn of the century it was clear that the old landmarks like the Michel were no longer of much use in this 21st century competition because they were too old. That's why the city spent a lot of money to set a new example: in the end, it ended up being 789 million from the city budget.
