German lignite mining is concentrated in the Rhineland, Lusatia and Central Germany regions. Domestic brown coal is mined exclusively in opencast mines. In 2019, a total of 131.3 million tons of raw lignite were mined. In Germany, 90 percent of brown coal is used to generate electricity and district heating in public and industrial power plants. Around 10 percent goes to refining companies for the production of briquettes, coke, pulverized coal, fluidized bed coal and lignite xylitol. The Coal Power Generation Termination Act of August 13, 2020 regulates the phase-out of coal-fired power generation in Germany by 2038. In 2019, around 15,500 people were employed in brown coal mining nationwide
As of 2021, the land consumption of German open-cast lignite mines was 1.6 hectares per day. According to statistics from the coal industry, a total of 179,402 hectares of land have been used in open-cast mines in Germany since brown coal mining operations began

The lookout points of the opencast mines and Paffendorf Castle are open again during the day.

Clear view of bucket wheel excavators, spreaders and opencast mining terraces! Spectacular views of the Garzweiler, Hambach and Inden opencast mines are offered by six viewing points that RWE has set up in the Rhenish mining area. Three quarters of German brown coal is mined here - in the city triangle between Aachen, Cologne and Mönchengladbach. This corresponds to up to 100 million tons per year.

Our viewing point in Grevenbroich-Neurath offers visitors an impressive view of the world's most modern lignite power plant blocks BoA 2&3. In the historic Paffendorf Castle in the Rhein-Erft district, our permanent exhibition provides information about the extraction and use of brown coal in the Rhenish district.
