Around 140 years ago, Dungel, then woodsman and later abbot of Göttweig Abbey, planted some seeds of the North American giant sequoia near Paudorf. The gigantic conifers, which you usually find in Sequoia National Park in California, are now larger than their European counterparts here and are far from reaching their maximum height of around 95 meters.
The oldest giant sequoia, by the way, is already a proud 3,200 years old and is located in the Sierra Nevada in California.

In 1880, the then woodruff and later abbot of the Göttweig Abbey, Adalbert Dungel, brought the seeds of the American sequoia tree into the ground in a piece of wood near Paudorf. The seeds thrived so splendidly that the forestry man was commemorated in 1909. Today, the trees coming from the New World clearly tower over the spruce and beech, although they are still considered young. Their full height and, above all, their full extent can only be reached in about 1000 years.
