Gravenhorst Monastery looks back on a long history. In 1256 the Mecklenburg knight Konrad von Brochterbeck founded the monastery together with his wife. The independence of the monastery or the Cistercian abbey had to assert itself again and again against attacks by secular lords, for whom the independent Gravenhorster women were a thorn in the side.

In 1808 the monastery was closed and the last Cistercian women left the abbey three years later. Today the DA, Kunsthaus Kloster Gravenhorst, is located here, where exhibitions, concerts and educational programs take place.

The Cistercian order is a Benedictine reform order that was founded by Robert von Molesme in 1098 in Citeaux in Burgundy in France. Under Bernhard von Clairvaux (1090 to 1153) the order spread across Western and Central Europe.

The Cistercians made great contributions to the development of agriculture, handicrafts, art and science. In the Tecklenburger Land, too, three Cistercian convents were built in the 13th century: Leeden, Shell and Gravenhorst.

But only in Gravenhorst is there still a completely preserved monastery complex. It is the only one in northern Germany whose buildings are largely intact.

To the south of the east wing is the brewing and baking house, the core of which dates back to the Middle Ages, but which also has architectural features from the 17th century on the outside. The mill belonging to the monastery has also been preserved, while only the foundations of the former forge building still exist.

In 1643, the nuns also bought the town house in Bevergern from an over-indebted citizen, where they could seek refuge in dangerous situations via the so-called Nonnenpättken.

The monastery complex is surrounded by spacious gardens and forest areas, which are now a popular destination.

It was not immediately apparent what kind of system it was. The spaces are very open and offer art to reflect on. There is also a small café. All in all, the whole area was a sobering sight. Nothing special.
