The Ulm Police Headquarters, created in 2014 by merging several previous departments, is housed in the so-called New Building. The pentagonal Renaissance building made of exposed brick was initially built between 1584 and 1593 as a municipal warehouse, including for grain. From 1648, the New Building was the meeting place for the council members of the Swabian Imperial Circle. Parts of the building were also used as a prison and registry office at times. After Ulm lost its status as a free imperial city in 1802, the Ulm City Council met in the New Building for a time. The building also became the headquarters of several authorities. After the building was largely destroyed by a major fire in 1924, the Württemberg Police Directorate moved in after it was restored in 1927. During the Nazi era, an office of the Secret State Police (Gestapo) was also housed here. After the end of the war, it again became the headquarters of various offices, including - as the predecessor of today's headquarters - the Ulm Police Directorate.

The New Building is, as can be seen at first glance, an old building, built at the end of the 16th century from inconspicuous exposed brick. Its true size is revealed when you look down on it from the cathedral tower, and its architectural charms only become apparent once you have entered its inner courtyard.
