The Scherenburg was built in 1243 by the Counts of Rieneck to secure customs revenue during the crossing of the Main. Due to border disputes with the Würzburg Bishop Hermann I. von Lobdeburg the castle went to a settlement in 1469 at Würzburg. It was named after the prince-bishop Rudolf II of Scherenberg. Before it became the property of the city Gemünden, she was until 1825 privately owned and still inhabited.
