At Caspar David Friedrich's former birthplace at Langen Straße 57, today's Caspar David Friedrich Center, there is a memorial plaque in honor of the great romantic.

The inscription on the plaque reads:

At this point it stood /
Birthplace of the painter /
Caspar David Friedrich
Born September 5, 1774, died May 7, 1840

The memorial plaque for Caspar David Friedrich was placed on the successor building to the house where he was born, which burned down in 1901, on the occasion of his 150th birthday in 1924.

Hardly any other artist from the history of Greifswald receives as much appreciation as Caspar David Friedrich. Caspar David Friedrich is the most famous son of the city of Greifswald. He was born in 1774 as the sixth child of the Friedrich family and lived in the then university and Hanseatic city of Greifswald until he was 20.

However, the Friedrich family was known to the people of Greifswald at that time through other arts. The Friedrich family owned their house near Greifswald Cathedral and today's Langen Straße. It was also the Friedrich family's soap factory. If you went about your work in this house, you could already smell it in the market square, and that wasn't always to your advantage.

Caspar David Friedrich was born in 1774 in Greifswald, which was then part of Sweden, the son of a light caster and soap maker, the sixth of ten children. He was considered one of the most important draftsmen and painters of the German early Romantic period. He received his first drawing lessons from the drawing and university architect Johann Gottfried Quistorp. Friedrich belonged to the first generation of independent artists.

His artistic talent and the success that came with it made Caspar David Friedrich the most famous son in the city of Greifswald. Thanks to his interest, the city has ensured that the monastery ruins of Eldena have not completely fallen into disrepair. In 1800 he drew attention to them with a drawing of the ruins and thus secured them in 1828.
