The Langwassersee is an artificially created still body of water in the Langwasser district of Nuremberg.
In the area originally called "Bey der Düren Stange",[2] there has been a sparse coniferous forest since the 14th century, which belonged to the Lorenzer Reichswald. During the First World War, paths through the forest were planned and a "combat firing range" set up. During the National Socialist era, the Märzfeld was to be built there. During the Nazi party rallies, foam maneuvers by the Wehrmacht were to take place. 24 "defensive towers" and grandstands for 150,000 spectators were planned. At the beginning of the Second World War, only eleven towers and parts of the 14 m high grandstands had been completed when construction work came to a standstill. After the end of the war, the site was initially left largely unchanged and used by the US Army as a military training area and camp. Until 1950, a branch track of the Nuremberg debris railway ran through the area from Silberbuck to Fischbach.

The towers were blown up in 1966/67 and the area was then left to its own devices. In the 1970s, residential buildings were built nearby, the area, which has since been reforested, was increasingly littered and swamped by the Langwasser floods. In the late 1980s, the area was renovated and the Langwassersee with its small island was laid out as planned. The fragments of grandstands or their granite blocks that were already there were used for the bank reinforcements. The sculpture “Couple” by the sculptor Klaus Schultze has been located in the lake next to the island since 1987. However, the lake has only been recorded in maps since 1994.

The park around the lake is beautiful. In the lake there is a great work of art on waterproof glazed tiles: “The Couple”.
