On the Sassnitz pier you can walk almost 1.5 kilometers across the Baltic Sea. It was built between 1889 and 1912 and takes its visitors past the picturesque town harbor which, with its numerous jetties, exudes a cosy, maritime flair.

In winter, especially when there is an icy east wind, the spray lays a glittering white veil over the green and white lighthouse on the tip of the pier. – A very impressive sight and a popular photo motif!

From 1889 to 1912, a 380 meter long pier was built to protect the Sassnitz fishing port, but this had no direct land connection due to fear of flint deposits in the harbor entrance. Eventually the land opening was closed and the east pier was extended several times. Today it measures 1,450 meters, making it Europe's longest external pier.
After severe winter damage, it was closed to the public for a long time, but today you can walk down to the lighthouse again.
In the Sassnitz city harbor entrance there are two pier lights, whose task is to show the incoming ships their fairway: one on the west side, the other on the east side. The pier light on the west side is the less attractive one. It is a red, dodecagonal, steel lantern house from 1977 with a fire height of 10 meters.
On the east pier, however, there is a typical lighthouse, as you can see from numerous photos. There was already a pier light here in 1903, but it was replaced by today's lighthouse 34 years later. This is an octagonal, 15 meter high steel structure with an external balcony. The lighthouse is green with a white band. The fire height is 15 meters. Both – the pier fire and the lighthouse – are architectural monuments. The lighthouse can be recognized in the city's coat of arms, the east pier fire was a stamp motif in GDR times.
From the viewing platform of the lighthouse you have a breathtaking view and you can let the fresh Baltic Sea wind blow around your nose.

To protect the emerging Sassnitz fishing port, a pier was built between 1889 and 1912. It was 380 meters long and not directly connected to the land because of concerns about flint deposits in the harbor entrance.

The pier consisted of mutually anchored pile walls, between which stones were placed. A parapet wall was built facing the sea. However, the opening to the land was eventually closed, and the pier was extended westward by about one kilometer. With the advent of rail ferry traffic, it was further extended, reaching its current length of 1,450 meters. It was and remains the longest outer pier in Europe.

Heavily damaged in the severe winter of 1978/79, it was closed to visitors for a long time. Today, the pier is once again accessible as far as the lighthouse in front of Sassnitz, providing a refreshing, mostly dry excursion into the Baltic Sea.
