The castle was originally surrounded by a rampart with a moat. Both fortifications disappeared over time. Only the lake with the adjoining moat is reminiscent of the external defensive structure. Even today, the moat separates the castle from the street or from the farmyard.
The wings were not built at the same time, but followed one after the other, so slight changes in architectural style and decorations can be seen. In addition, the castle was originally completely plastered and had rich, decorative paintings. The plaster was not completely removed until 1974, so that today the picture is characterized by the partially dark sandstone. Cord Tönnis from Hamelin is believed to have been involved as the master builder. Work on the north wing and the central building is assigned to master builder Eberhard Wilkening.
