During the First World War, the Neigembos was almost completely cut down. A few beech trees survived the clear-cutting and are now the more than one hundred year old veteran trees. Admire respectfully, but do not hug them because most of them grow on slopes of sunken roads. If you enter the slopes, you run the risk of landslides or the soil is compacted (trampled). The nutrient-rich humus layer then washes away, so that the water has less chance of penetrating the soil. Enjoy these veterans from a distance.

A sunken road is a road or path whose road surface is lower than the surrounding land. Using the same path for centuries, on foot or by horse and cart, led to a natural erosion process. Loose soil was washed off with the rainwater and in this way the road continued to deepen year after year. It is a process that still occurs today as long as the road surface remains unpaved. By definition, we call a road a "hollow road" when the road surface is at least half a meter lower than the surrounding grounds.

Many routes offer varying lengths and difficulties, so you can choose an option suitable for all skill levels.

Are dogs allowed on the trails in Neigembos, and what are the regulations?

These ancient trees often grow on the slopes of the sunken roads, adding a historical and natural landmark element to your walk.

What is the historical significance of the Hollow Way and the Neigembos forest?
